The 2026 FIFA World Cup began on Thursday night with a spectacular opening ceremony at the legendary Estadio Azteca, blending mariachi orchestras, Indigenous dancers, and a drone light show that spelled out the tournament's 'Unity' motto. Hosts Mexico kicked off the tournament proper against Morocco, drawing 1-1 in a fiercely contested Group A opener. The expanded 48-team format runs across 16 cities in three countries through July 19.
